Learning languages, free!

2008 July 3

So I’ve looked all over to try and find some free language learning materials. Yep, good luck with that! At least, in the traditional homeschool curriculum sense, anyway. I did find a site that just amazes me, and I think my kids and I will come to LOVE it. Before You Know It is a language flashcard program, which is constantly added to by users.

(From the website)

    BYKI – What is it?

Before You Know It is a different kind of language-learning software. It is smart and personalized. It is curiously addictive – perhaps because it is so effective at teaching people words and phrases with Perfect Recall. But don’t take our word for it. Read what our users are saying or try a free software download in any of 63 languages.

I downloaded the program, then added several Spanish and a couple Latin lists. I have run through the first couple sets of Spanish lists and it’s a lot of fun. My boys will LOVE this!

How else can you learn phrases in Swahili, in context, at home? :) I can see this getting good use as preparation for mission trips. Now if they’d just add Swati, that would help P, J and I get ready for our trip to Swaziland next year! Still, 63 languages is quite a lot.
