We bought a CKC registered Pom

now what? I didn’t think to ask the breeder WHICH organization she was registered through prior to driving an hour to get her. I had no idea there were even more than ONE registry for dogs. After arriving home with our new little bundle (who, by the way, is gorgeous, seems to be very healthy, and a total sweetheart!) did I do some research on the Continental Kennel Club. I learned this this is nearly a bogus registration, as they will allow a breeder to register mutts (OK call them designer doggies if you want to, but they are MUTTS).

The papa is a gorgeous white fully-registered AKC pom, and I saw his pedigree (and recognized one of his parents as coming from a breeder I’ve emailed with several times, who is active in showing and agility, among other things). But mama was CKC registered only. She registered the papa with CKC “So they would have matching papers” and then registered the litter CKC also. The parents were very well cared for house dogs. Loving and clean, healthy in appearance and friendly. This was not a puppy mill. Now I don’t know what to do. J was planning on getting into agility and breeding.

I need people with CKC information (and again, NOT the Canadian Kennel Club, which I know is legit….. the Continental Kennel Club is the one to which I am referring.) Is it possible that there are responsible breeders who are active in Pom circles who register CKC only? (And if you are one, please let me know why you chose this route.) I do know of one breeder who thinks the AKC’s guidelines are too narrow for the dog’s sizes and too picky for certain things, like how the tail is carried. I understand that, and I agree in part. What I’m really asking is did we just make a big mistake here?

If I have all the testing done (CERF, OFA, DNA for bloodlines) and she tests out just fine, what then? This was a Christian lady and I don’t think she deliberately did anything, although ignorance certainly may have played a part. I’m not sure what to do.
